I bow my head to the greatest soul who......,

2nd February being, Sri Purandaradaasa's puNya thithi, this write-up is in its form. Listening to his composition ‘Enu dhanyaLo lakumi?, entha maanyaLo?’; I wonder was there ever any other person on this earth who could describe the same content in a much more resplendent way than Sri Purandaradaasa himself? Thyaagaraja Swami being such a great composer considered him as his Maanasa Guru.

Though Sri Purandaradaasa was, is, will be forever hailed as ‘Karnaataka Sangeetha Pithaamaha’, his contributions and remembrance is not been done the way as done to Trinities of Carnatic Music. Much to say, 21st century Carnatic musicians expect to get applauds for the main piece (Krithis) in his/her concerts than DevaraNaama (It can be rendered as heavily as the Trinity Kritis are rendered or even as RTPs).

A recap on what I have heard and read of him..,

Birth:
Once Naarada, approached Supreme almighty Vishnu seeking him to clarify as to which is his permanent abode. Lord says thus:

 || नाहम् वासामि वैकुन्टे , न योगी ह्रिदयेरवोव् |
| मत्
भक्ता यत्र गायन्ति , तत्र तिष्ठामि नारदा ||

At Purandaraghada, thus Naarada descended to be born as 'SrinivaasaNaayaka'.

Education:
He was given education to be well versed in Sanskrit, Music and Prakrit. Parallel to this he acquired knowledge on examining pearls.

Marriage:
Got married, to Paanduranga’s devotee, SaraswatiBhai.

A Miser:
Being a jewel merchant, his total property accounted to 9 crores, which got him the name 'NavakOtiNaarayaNa'. This business of his made him a miser.

Turn of events:
As this was not destined to, for what he was born, Lord Vishnu himself came to SrinivaasaNaayaka as a Brahmin seeking for his help to perform the upanayana for his son. As expected, SrinivaasaNaayaka didn’t help him with money. Then the Brahmin goes to SaraswatiBhai to help him for the event. She donates her Nose stud.

Taking the same Nose stud he goes to SrinivaasNaayaka to pledge it and get the money in return. Seeing the nose stud he identifies it to be his wife’s. Locking it, he returns home only to find his wife without the nose stud.

With anger, asks his wife to get it. With no option of what to be done, she stands before the Tulasi Brindavana and prepares to drink the mixture of diamond powder and water. When she is about to have it, she stopped only to hear a sound in the glass. It was the same nose stud which she gave to the Brahmin.

Looking at the nose stud which SarswatiBhai bought, SrinivaasaNayaka returns to his jeweler shop to recheck if he has both nose studs with him now. But as he opened the locker he didn’t find the nose stud which he locked.

This event made him to get contemplative about the happening & donates his whole earnings to poor.

Tutelage under Sri Vyaasaraya:
With family he reaches Hampi to meet Sri Vyaasaraya and learn under him. KanakaDaasa and Sri Vaadiraja were his co-students.

Purandaradasa:
Sri Vyaasaraya prompts SrinivasaNaayaka to compose songs on PurandaraVittala. Thus he came to be known as PurandaraDaasa.

Contribution to the current Carnatic music learning system:
Long before Sri PurandaraDaasa, many composers tried to simplify the Carnatic music learning system. But the approach wasn’t welcome. Sri Vyaasaraya assigned this to Sri Purandaradaasa. He tried different possibilities; pros and cons of introducing different ragas at the early stage of learning. With many trails and failures, he succeeded in giving the present learning format to the Carnatic music system.

Early in educating music, he introduced MaayamaaLawagowLa raga to learn saraLi & jhanti varase. Then he introduced ‘piLLari geethegaLu’ starting with LambhOdara. This followed KundhaGowra, KereyaNeeranu, Padhumanaabha etc. In this progress, students learnt different raga at right time without the introduction of too many ragas at early stage.

This procedure is followed even to this day in South India.

Once, ThaLLapaaka Annamacharya sang Padhumanaabha in the sanctum sanctorum of Tirumala temple, the abode of Lord Srinivaasa. He highly praised the contribution of Sri Purandaradaasa to the field of Carnatic music.

His compositions sums up to 4,75,000. His youngest son added 25,000 more compositions.

He was the composer who had the wit to compose songs even at very lighter instances. There is an occasion when he composed a song, being asked to compose on Green Chilli.

On the other hand, he is the composer whose compositions preach moral to the humanity along with praising god. People who have heard his compositions & understood his vast knowledge in Kannada & Sanskrit can never forget them.

And probably he is the only shishya who has got a song composed on him by his guru Sri Vyaasaraaya !

Specific to me, his influence is just beyond expressing. Have been hearing his songs since, young. Proud to own his compositions book which belonged to my grandfather, in turn presented to me by my grandmother which is  64yrs now ! :)

Well, whenever I hear his name or his songs, I bow my head to the greatest soul whose songs mean more than just moral or devotional song.

The Jaunt that was .........,

Better late than never ! Let me share my tribute on our Chikkamagaloor trip. :-)
(Includes the credit as my First Post on blog, too)

The 18th of June; at the dawn getting up from bed, excitement rose getting the thoughts of voyage of the night. Day was not as usual, as the trauma of the journey ran in the head.
Exactly at 7:20PM, upon Lak's arrival, we started to Pooh's house and reached by 8:00PM. Waiting for Sind's call for alerting us for the pickup we ranted for about one hour guessing about the trip, contents in the baggage etc. As known for her mind-blowing intelligence Pooh's baggage was astonishingly light weighted against mine & Lak's. (Well the truth came out the next day that she left most of the things unpacked !). Nevertheless, she argued that she had everything needed in her bag. !
Exactly at 9:00PM, we left for the pickup point waiting for the bus's arrival, shooting initial snaps of the trip on the road. After 15mins wait, the pleasant-scented bus arrived :). Hopping into the bus & settling down, posing for few clicks, we headed towards the next pickups.
By 10:30PM; with everyone in the bus the journey towards the destined place kicked off. With all nostalgic thoughts, shouts, laughter; the time waved by, being unnoticeable. For whatever Sind was famous for; it happened during the initial stage of the journey slot with her fall from the bus's steps with the skid (Ahhh, born 'Maakad'). Now, with contentment the night ended.

By 5:30AM on 19th June, we arrived at Chikkamagaloor and headed towards Sterling Guest House being awestruck with the nature's serene beauty clicking snaps and exclaiming at the creator's canvas !
Arriving at the Guest house and diving out of the bus, the nature mesmerized us against the clumsy environment of Bangalore (Yet Bangalore is an AC-Metro, no giving up !).

With our heavy luggages, started walking through the path leading to the Guest room. Stepping in; again we were excited to have a scenic view from our room's sit-out. Chatting and having few snaps; we started to get ready for the day !
Out of the room by 9:00AM; we headed towards Viewpoint, on the way to Kemmangundi. Reaching there, the tremor of the existence of Leech started. With timely look at the foot, now and again, we enjoyed the scenery for about half an hour.
Then we reached Horticulture guest house for the Breakfast; only to learn that nothing was left for us to eat. !

Waiting for something to be prepared we spent time in chatting & getting the view of first leech's attack ! (Bhayankara ! ufffff).
Upma was prepared for us which was bland. I personally hate that dish. At home if my mother prepares it, I will have a second choice of dish to relish. But needless to say, I ate it as though it was a plate of BisibeLebath there !.

Our next itinerary was the 'Z-point' which was 3 Kms walk from there. Starting off with the agony of Leech's thought, we took around an hour to reach the point. Mid-way we came across a small water-fall. Cau got a stuck of Leech ;) and was eager to get back. Yet, continued the journey with few tear-drops.
Reaching the 'Z' point of the particular mountain range with timely help of Vadi & Suji , the blend of unpolluted air & greenery in the sorrunding with mighty Sahyadri mountain ranges seeming stretched forever, makes you so oblivious. We spent about 15mins up there enjoying the nature.
Getting back the same 3Kms, with the now and then appearance of Leeches & coming across a Snake and with Lak's funny claiming "Hey, Its only 'Kochche (Mud-water)' ya !" (The beauty of Kannada+English & example of Sahavaasa Dhosha with Pooh), the journey drained us out.
Back in the bus we headed towards Hebbe falls. With constant policing of the sandals for the Leeches, we arrived in no time. Booking Four jeeps, we started towards the falls. The Jeep-drive repaired out, our 206 bones. Watta drive that was !

On the way to the falls, few on-goers claimed that "There are crores and crores of Leeches, so if you are afraid of it, do not go". With this, I returned back with Cau and we spent our time sitting in the Jeep and chatting. Mid-way a rattle snake was hit and killed by one of our jeep drivers ! .
Back to the spot we boarded the bus and started towards the guest house. The journey lasted for three long hours. Back in the cottage, we got a chance to see how good Pooh can dance :). Refreshing, we went to have the dinner. Probably every one had the most sumptuous dinner for the day !.  Post dinner, we spent time in the warmth of camp-fire. Then back to the cottage, hitting the sack, deep sleep invited.
Getting up in the morning at 5:00AM, we got ready for the day, chatting. Pooh asserted that she had a dream of Leeches, the previous night, seeming very tensed. Out of the cottage, we had hot coffee and started our Photo session for almost an hour !.

The clicking session included us posing with ladder, swing & a bi-cycle :). The ride on the bi-cycle was nostalgic enough to take my memories back to childhood. Probably Lak relished the same thing.

Boarding the bus, our journey started towards Mullayyanagiri (Highest peak in Karnataka). I bet and swear that this place is better than Ooty, Kodai or Munnar. In a sentence it is, 'Heaven on Earth'. The foggy climate made it more relishing. To reach the top of the Mullayyanagiri hill, one needs to climb around 300 steps (I guess, not sure though).
As we started to climb the steps it started drizzling. The initial foggy weather with the drizzle was a different experience though. Up the hill we could see the stretch of mountain ranges. To the right of the hill a small idol of Nandi was situated in the shelter of stone hedge.

There was a path leading to the entrance of a cave. The cave had some multiple entrances and exits like that of a maze. The entire vicinity being unlighted, few of us did not explore it well.

The entrance of the cave had a mini-cave which grabbed the attention of Sind, needless to say, she went on it & posed for few clicks :). Sind, you are just inevitable to these sort of things !

Back on the hill top we visited the temple of presiding deity.

Then getting back  down the hill, we had the brunch at a temple-run dining place.
By 2:30PM, we set out journey back towards Bangalore. Mid-way in the Chikkamagaloor town we shopped 2Kgs of Coffee Powder (Chikkamagaloor special) :) !. By 5:30, at Kunigal we had morsel and continued journey back to Bangalore. The much-like 'confessing-event' was a big entertainment to kill the time. Atleast for some of us. Isn't Sind & Cau? ;)
Finally the journey ended with many memories to cherish for a life time.! Again as the truth goes, CS-2008 rocks forever !!!
And my special tribute to Cau, Lak, Poo, Sind (Alphabetical order) for being wunnerful companions in this trip.
With this Chikkamagaloor trip my memory of Kerala (Oct - 2007) trip is over-written. Missed Geeth & Yash though. Once again, miss you all in daily life :(
Last but not the least, thanks to Dinesh for this fabulous collage-video.

Bottom line is " The Jaunt that was more than, just which haunts memories !"
